I DIDN’T SEE BRETT the rest of the day, but by dinnertime, as we waited in line to be seated in the dining room, he was in the lounge performing. As Tori and Jake twisted tongues in the corner next to me, I watched Brett strum his guitar. His eyes were on me, a slight smile playing at the edges of his lips, and he looked so content singing like he was in this whole other world that so few people had access to. The music carried him away, to another place, another time, where things were beautiful and simple and lovely.

“God,” Tori said finally, pulling away from Jake to give Brett the stink-eye. “He’s making it totally obvious.”

“What?” I asked.

“He’s singing to you. Like, right at you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” I flushed and looked away, but I knew she was right, and it was painfully obvious. Well, not so painful that I didn’t like it. I’d never been so damn flattered in my life, especially when every other girl in the lobby turned to scope me out like I was some secret new thing they wanted to size up.

“Whose making it obvious?” Jake asked, leaning around Tori to get a good look at Brett. For a split second, I swore I saw a flash of recognition light in his eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared, as though it was never there.

“Oh,” he said. “Yeah, he’s totally checking you out.”

“Jake!” I cried, and my face flushed another shade of red. “Stay out of it, okay?”

“Did you?” Jake asked. “Did you guys fuck each other?” He nudged me playfully, but I scowled. I didn’t like when Jake got overly enthusiastic, because he’d always been too much of a lady’s man for my taste. It made me uncomfortable, but Tori didn’t seem even to notice, or mind, so I usually kept my mouth shut.

“Can you two just let me enjoy this without trying to ruin it for me? All you’re going to end up doing is scaring him away. Can you resist? Can you?”

“Oh please,” Tori said. She flipped her blond hair. “Real men aren’t frightened away, Kylie. If he really likes you, he won’t care.”

“He can only like me so much,” I insisted. “We live in different states.” I lowered my voice then, as I was drawing annoyed stares in from the surrounding couples.

“Maybe he’d like to join us for dinner,” Tori said. She looked over at Brett as he finished the last chorus of his song.

“Don’t!” I hissed. “Don’t invite him to din—”

“Hey, Brett,” she called, shoving past me. I tripped over my high heels and stumbled over myself, seconds away from eating the floor, when Jake grabbed my arm and pulled me upright. “Would you like to join us for dinner?” I heard Tori say somewhere to my left. “We have a private table.”

Humiliated, I turned away, pretending I hadn’t heard her. I wanted Brett to come to dinner with us, but I also worried
